If the thought of a classic Volkswagen sounds appealing but you’re not necessarily seeking a Beetle or a Karmann Ghia, what about a early Transporter Utility Pickup? This example was featured on the August 2005 cover of Hot VWs Magazine and has several serious modifications!
Made in August 1959 in Volkswagen’s Hanover, West Germany factory, this pickup now sports a PPG Sealing Wax Red exterior (L53). The paint and trim are in overall excellent condition. The body is straight and solid, the chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body and look great. Above the front bumper are a pair of Hella headlights. The engine bay is extremely tidy and the cargo area is in fine shape. The owner can keep the side walls and tailgate up for a traditional but larger pickup box or all three sides can be lowered for easier loading and unloading.
This truck rides on staggered radials, size 135R15 in front, and Kelly Chargers out back, size 205/65R15. Each tire is mounted to an EMPI five-spoke alloy wheel. The wheels and tires are all in very good order. The front brakes have been upgraded to CSP Wide-5 discs at every wheel.
Out back and under the cargo bed is a custom-built, flat, air-cooled four-cylinder engine from Scat Enterprises in Redondo Beach, California. The engine has 7.5:1 compression, 4340 steel I-beam rods, dual Weber IDF carburetors, a Weber intake manifold, Cima/Mahle pistons and a Compu-Fire electronic ignition.
Inside, the black bench seat has been redone a by Joe’s Upholstery. It looks fantastic and offers good contrast to the red metal portions of the cabin. There’s no carpet; black floormats are in place instead. A two-spoke, white steering wheel provides its own contrast to the red metal instrument panel which has a VDO speedometer. A floor-mounted shifter completes the interior.
The first generation of the Volkswagen Type 2 with the split windshield, informally called the Microbus, Splitscreen, or Splittie among modern fans, was produced from 8 March 1950 through the end of the 1967 model year. From 1950 to 1956, the T1 (not called that at the time) was built in Wolfsburg; from 1956, it was built at the completely new Transporter factory in Hanover. Like the Beetle, the first Transporters used the 1100 Volkswagen air-cooled engine, a 1.1-liter, 24 bhp, air-cooled flat-four-cylinder “boxer” engine mounted in the rear. This was upgraded to the 1.2L, 30 bhp engine in 1953. A higher compression ratio became standard in 1955; while an unusual early version of the 40 bhp engine debuted exclusively on the Type 2 in 1959. Any 1959 models that retain that early engine today are true survivors.
