    Description

Antique Tower Bean's Pattern police handcuffs in very good condition. The key was broken off in one of the cuffs. I do not have the other part of the key. These are rust free and are not pitted. Nice deep brown patina and smoothed areas where they would have rubbed on a prisoner's clothing.  Tower began producing handcuffs in 1865. In 1882 E.D. Bean, another cuff maker submitted a patent with a stop in the lock mechanism to keep the cuffs from locking accidentally. Tower immediately applied for a patent saying that Bean's design was flawed. Tower applied for his patent 5 days after Bean's patent application. I think he had to acknowledge that his cuffs were almost the same as Bean's. That's the only connection between them I could find. Tower's cuffs were popular in America and dominated the industry until 1912 when the swing cuff design was introduced by another maker. The swing cuff is still the most common design today.       See all pictures and zoom in for details. These can ship in a small flat rate box for under 9 dollars.
