WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT IT: This bolo is a well documented design of Ted Edaakie's, and it is a favorite design of his. Theodore Edaakie is called Ted Edaakie, whose work is in the C.G.Wallace catalog, the Museum of The American Indian Smithsonian Institution, The Museum of New Mexico and The Heard Museum in Arizona. Edaakie has won several awards for his work. The C.G. Wallace Sotheby's catalog also reports the sale of his works. He was a superb lapidarist as well as silversmith and the stones on this bolo are superb. They look as if there were a thick enamel applied rather than the inlay of stones. This piece was in a private collection for many decades. Within this piece, there is use of a spotted cowrie shell in brown and white, which is a lovely use for the owl and jet which is also used for dot inlay in the eyes, coral, brown shell, yellow lip shell, and a beautiful turquoise. The shells and stones are all hand cut and buffed and have three dimensionality, which gives a lot of life to the image. I'm always impressed by his use of color which I find to be brilliant and arresting. He had a great talent for color. The silver work is also special. There is his characteristic stamp work on flattened stamped wires that frame the owl and on raindrops. The stamp work is identifiably his and his alone. There is a beautiful blue crescent moon in this bolo and an abalone star. The star glows and sparkles as if it were alive. The leather on the tie is in good condition and the entire piece is in excellent vintage condition. The tips are very nice old, original, ones. The bolo is not stamped with Ted Edaakie's hallmark, but it is common that he didn't sign and this is a known design that only he created and I guarantee that it is his work. I love it and I think the colors on this piece as well as the design and workmanship are aesthetically thrilling.
BACKGROUND: Theodore Edaakie was active from the 1930's through the 1960's and his work is in the collections of the Smithsonian, Museum of the American Indian and Santa Fe Museum of New Mexico. He was one of the most important lapidarists and silversmiths and this bolo is a rare example. It is a top quality piece. I note that a bolo of this type was recently being offered in a gallery at 50, a book written several years ago priced this style bolo of his at up to 00. His owls were part of the CG Wallace collection as well. In the 1930s and 1940s he was employed as an artist at C. G. Wallace's Trading Post in Zuni. Mosaic inlay pieces of his were collected by Wallace and some sold in the Sothebys auction of the Wallace collection.
CONDITION: excellent vintage, wearable and collectible.

• unsigned which was usual, but definitively attributed to Ted Edaakie, Zuni
• unmarked for metal content but that is usual for the times and it's at least coin at .900 or sterling at .925 silver
SUMMARY: This is a gorgeous example of Ted Edaakie's work, and he was one of the greatest master Zuni artists. The creative use of shells and stones, the color play and the overall design are all top notch. It is distinguished by the areas of color which are so vibrant and strong. The abalone star sparkles joyfully and there is a blue moon along with the wonderfully wrought and inlaid owl. It is a striking piece that will always be arresting and beautiful. I love his work. This bolo has great charm, is a collector's item and a joy to wear. (I bought it well, so for now am selling it under value.)
