EARLY MOST RARE NAVAJO GANADO 6 STRAND CORAL HUBBELL & SILVER BEAD NECKLACE

Here is a rare vintage handmade necklace I traded for from Dinetah Navajo Land  that I have had in my collection for over 50 years.
It is a six strand very rare  coral Hubbell Bead bead necklace with 3/16" coin silver beads interspersed  randomly between the elongated barrel coral tube beads.  The coral beads measure approximately 1/8" in diameter and about 3/8' to 1/2" in length.  The necklace is 28" long. Don Lorenzo Hubbell and C. N. Cotton collaborated and partnered on a number of trading posts in the late 19th and early 20th Century. Looking for a less expensive alternative to turqupoise and coral, Hubbell  began importing glass beads from the old world bead master makers
from Italy, Bohemia and later Czechoslovakia. They were purchased as a less expensive way of producing jewelry. Since the traders often supplied the Native artists with the materials for jewelry sold at the trading posts, the traders looked for ways to lower the costs of producing enough jewelry to meet the market demand. They found one way through the cottage crafters in areas such as Czechoslovakia.
They came in a wide array of shapes, sizes and colors. Ones imported to the Southwest were shaped and colored to resemble the turquoise and coral used in Native American jewelry. I have pictured a few other loose Hubbell Beads (  NOT INCLUDED IN THIS SALE ) that I traded for along with this necklace from Ernie and Esther Vandewagen in Gallup in the 1970's
