    Description

    Welcome.
Offered... an extraordinary hand constructed early-Century Navajo belt probably dating to the 1930's hand hammered and repoussee´d and stamped. This is an exceptional find, and very gorgeous. The buckle has three different crescent stamps along with the repoussee´ work and the conchos repeat one of those stamps and sport very deep and elegant repoussee´ elements. Substantial weight indeed at 272.9grams with the leather. The belt is at least coin silver at .900, or sterling silver at .925. The runners are copper. There is considerable patina, left untouched, but the high areas when the belt is worn again, will lighten. This belt will fit through Levi belt loops, as the 10 conchos measure 1-3/4" high by 2-1/8" wide and the buckle size is 1-7/8" high by 2-3/4" wide.  The original belt was damaged and new leather was made for it (I included two pics, the second and third picture, with the old leather). The new leather is nice soft leather, and it is about 44 long end to end, and 3/4" wide. Useable length may be 40" or 41". There are several holes and more can be made. The conchos can be moved closer together and the belt cut, or separated further, of course.  During those times signing pieces and marking them for silver content was rare and this belt is not signed nor marked for silver content. It's guaranteed to be Navajo made and at least coin silver at .900 or sterling silver at .925. This treasure comes from the private collection of a major Arizona collector and it is representative of best quality very old work. It is an exceptional piece that will be suitable for all occasions and always an elegant statement. It can be worn with silk and cashmere or with jeans. This quality is museum worthy.

When I include pages from published books in my listings it is in accordance with Fair Use Law, which permits the use of source material for discussion, reference, education and criticism.
Attributions on many of the old pieces of Native American jewelry are sometimes a moving target. All the books have errors, so in addition to counterchecking, I have developed some expertise over the years and I do care about getting it right, so as more information comes to light I update my listings and also get in touch with my previous buyers, to inform them of any changes in attributions. I am sincerely committed to ongoing accuracy.
