These were purchased at an industrial liquidation recently, and they were brand new in the original factory boxes.  We repackaged them in heavy Ziplok bags so they will ship fast & cheap.  These are made from Aavid's proprietary alloy ("Thermalloy") which maximizes the rate of heat dissipation.  We are not heatsink experts, but we read a couple of articles on the manufacturer's website.  Best we can determine, heatsinks with lower, thicker fins provide better heat dissipation in ambient or static air applications.  High, thin fins are better suited for forced air applications.  Thus, the heatsinks in this listing would probably be ideal for projects where a fan or other forced air source is unavailable.  Certainly, a fan wouldn't hurt anything, but they were probably not designed for one.
We obtained a boatload of these at a good price.  As a result, we can offer top quality, name brand, Made in USA heatsinks for less than the cost of the cheap imported variety.
