WWI British Mark I Brodie Helmet with Issued Canvas Cover and Gasmask Complete.
Here we’ve got a very rare item. This is the original issued canvas cover with grommets on this helmet. The helmet itself is a Mark I, with maker mark D/F 13, manufactured 1917 or before, I believe. The cover also has a maker mark and broad arrow. The helmet’s chinstrap is broken, but it’s other wise complete with the liner. I was able to remove the cover and return it, carefully, for pictures. It will be shipped on the helmet, and I would advise that there’s really no reason for you to remove it. It feels very dry and I’ve had stuff like this rip with the smallest of friction. Just my advice.
The gas mask bag and helmet cover both have the initials T.C. Written on them. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find out the soldier’s name.
As much as I would have absolutely loved to pull the gas mask out and photograph it on a head with the helmet, it is extremely brittle and I couldn’t even bring myself to take it out of the bag. I tried, but I’m pretty certain it will break into pieces. There is a small cardboard box in the bottom of the bag under the filter, that seems to be a packet of defogger or something for the lenses.
These items are not in mint condition. In fact they are in relatively delicate condition and certainly show their 105+ years. They need to be conserved in a nice collection where they can continue to exist in this original condition.
This is a must have for a WWI British collector.
